FAQ

General Questions

Where is your office located?

My office is in my home at 6067 South Kingston Circle, Englewood, CO. Don’t be confused that you are not at an office building.

The property is at the crossroad of Orchard Road and Havana Street, about two miles east of I-25. Park in the driveway and ring the front doorbell.

What are your office hours?
My earliest session begins at 9:00 am, and the latest is at 6:00 pm.
How long is a typical session?
A typical session lasts 45 minutes. You have the option of scheduling two sessions together if you feel you’ll need additional time. Then, the session would be 90 minutes.
What do I do to get started?

You get started by setting up an initial consultation. From the first moment that you and I begin to talk, you’ve started your therapy. You’ve taken the first step, which is one of the most challenging steps.

Once you and I have decided to work together, we schedule your first session.

How much do you charge per session?

The fee is $225 per 45-minute session.

Do you accept insurance?

I do not accept insurance.

What is your cancellation policy?

You can cancel or change your appointment. However, I have a 24-hour cancellation policy. If you do not give me 24 hours’ notice of cancellation, I expect payment for the entire session.

I understand that extraordinary events occur. If that’s the case, we can discuss whether there will be a charge for the session.

What is a free initial phone consultation?

A free initial phone consultation is a time for us to chat and talk about what you need and what I do. It’s a way for us to decide if we are a good fit to work together.

It’s the beginning of bringing change into your life.

Are there other things I should know about your office?

My office is a comfortable place, where I hope you’ll feel at home. There is no couch for you to lie down on, but I’ve made sure the chairs are comfortable.

There are plenty of tissues available in case you need them. And for extra comfort, my therapy dog, Shylo, will lay near your feet. He’s a golden retriever, and it makes him happy to give you love if you want it. And if you choose to have him outside of the office, I know that he won’t take it personally.

With what age range do you work?
I work with men and women ranging in age from 21 years old to 100. I believe that we can all make changes within ourselves throughout life.
How does teletherapy work?

I am currently providing services virtually and in person. If you do choose virtual therapy, I will send you link before your session. It’s that easy!

I use a HIPAA-compliant platform that requires only that you have WIFI and a device that will work the same as your FaceTime chats with family. Shortly before our appointment, I will send you the link to access our video chat. That’s it!

Therapy Questions

How long will I be in therapy?
The length of therapy depends on many different factors, but I believe that true and lasting change does not happen quickly. However, that doesn’t mean you stay in therapy for years; it does mean it will be more than a few months.
What can I expect in the first session?

In the first and second sessions, I’ll be asking you a lot of questions. These sessions help me gather information about your history and the events that brought you to the current place in your life.

We are developing a beginning map of how you started in life and what factors influenced who you are today. I’m gathering information about you. So the more open and detailed you can be, the better it is.

Do I have to tell you everything?
You do not have to tell me everything. You get to decide what and when to tell me anything. Therapy is not something I do to you; it’s something we do together. But if your inner voice tells you not to tell me something, it’s usually a clue that you need to speak about it.
Is our work confidential?
Our work together is confidential. By state law and my profession’s ethics, I must keep everything you say to me strictly confidential.
How long have you been in practice?
I have been in practice for 43 years. I initially worked as a therapist in an outpatient drug program and then became the program director. I have been in private practice for 38 years, sometimes in a group, and more often in solo practice.
Have you been in therapy?
Yes, I have been in therapy several times. I would never go to a therapist who hasn’t done their therapy work. Everybody has a history; everybody has places where they need to change and grow… I am not the exception to that perspective.
What is your educational background?
In 1970, I received a Bachelor of Arts from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio. In 1977 and 1987, I respectively obtained a Master’s of Social Work and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Social Work from Barry University, Miami Shores, Florida.

Because I would like to ask…

Am I allowed to ask personal questions?

My training came from a strict, no-answers-to-personal-questions place. Your therapy is supposed to be about you, not me.

But through the years, I’ve seen that sometimes offering personal information can help. So my answer to this question is yes, you can ask; sometimes I will answer, and sometimes I won’t… it depends.

Do you have any children?

I have one son who is 31 years old. Being a parent has always been one of the greatest gifts of my life, also one of the most significant challenges. He keeps me motivated to be the best person I can be.

What is the most exciting experience of your life?
I cannot get this to one event. Two of the top ones were parachuting out of an airplane and seeing a gaggle of giraffes 50 yards from my jeep in Kenya.
What do you do when you're not working?
I love to travel and will go almost anywhere but prefer whatever place is most exotic. At home, you’ll find me cooking, baking, walking my beloved pup, Shylo, and enjoying living in Colorado.
